Abstract
Introduction: Healthcare practice must recognize illness as a holistic experience involving physical, emotional, and social vulnerability, extending beyond its biological dimension. The fragmentation and depersonalization of care highlight the need to prioritize human dignity and the comprehensive care of both the patient and their family.
Objective: To reflect on the vulnerability of the modern patient and its relationship with the ethics of care.
Methodology: Through a review of philosophical, bioethical, and nursing literature, this study analyzes how the tendency of contemporary health systems to prioritize efficiency, technologization, and standardized protocols fosters depersonalization and heightens patients' experience of vulnerability—occurring in a context where the ethics of care have historically been sidelined in favor of the deontological and administrative approaches of traditional bioethics.
Results: The article offers a critical reflection that reaffirms the centrality of care as an ethical, relational, and ontological dimension, grounded in the work of classical and contemporary authors. Recognizing patient vulnerability as a constitutive condition allows for the humanization of clinical practice, enriches bioethical reflection, and strengthens the healthcare professional-patient relationship.
Conclusions: Integrating the ethics of care into clinical bioethics fosters a more sensitive, dialogic, and ethical approach, capable of addressing the challenges of modern medicine without compromising the dignity and uniqueness of each patient.
