Knowledge in health workers: bioethical principles and functioning of the hospital bioethics committee

Abstract
Introduction: Knowledge of bioethics is fundamental in the practice of healthcare workers to understand and respect human dignity and the rights of patients and their families.
Objective: To describe the knowledge of bioethics and the functioning of the hospital bioethics committee (HBC) among healthcare workers.
Methodology: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted using a survey of 276 healthcare workers selected by proportional stratified sampling. The instrument consisted of 29 questions in 3 sections: I. Sociodemographic and occupational data (1-9), II. General knowledge of bioethics (10-18), and III. Knowledge regarding the functioning of the HBC (19-22, 27, and 28/23, 26, and 29). For qualitative variables, frequencies and proportions were calculated; for quantitative variables, measures of central tendency and dispersion.
Results: A median of 66.7% (IQR 60-80%) of bioethics knowledge was estimated. In defining bioethical principles, 250 (91.2%) responded correctly regarding autonomy, 223 (85%) regarding justice, and 224 (81.7%) regarding beneficence.
Conclusion: In general, healthcare workers' knowledge reflects a gap in understanding bioethics in healthcare and the functioning of the HBC. Knowledge of bioethical principles is fundamental for decision-making and actions during the healthcare process.
