The objective of this work is to present the what and why of the Stoma Clinic in the Hospital of Specialties of the National Medical Center Siglo XXI which, due to the growing demand of patients undergoing surgery that require as a palliative or therapeutic measure the creation of a stoma, was created in 1999, with the purpose of providing specialized care -in coordination with other departments of the hospital-, provide effective, quality care, unify criteria, promote self-care, support adaptation and integration into the new lifestyle and monitor the rights of the ostomized patient, a measure that has allowed in the short term to obtain significant efficiency and productivity indexes for the benefit of the patients' health and the organization of the service; At the same time, it has projected the participation of qualified nursing personnel in the care of these patients, defining the different roles and interventions in the different stages of the care process and promoting independent activities that support the rehabilitation and adaptation of the patient to his new style of life.
