Abstract

The Sixth Meeting of the World Consultative Group on Nursing and Midwifery Geneva 19-22 November 2000, was convened to analyze the following topics: future directions to strengthen the contribution of nursing and midwifery services to the initiatives of the World Health Organization ( WHO) in this area; and global trends and conditions in the areas of health, socioeconomic development, health reform and the performance of health systems. In all the debates, emphasis was placed on the growing awareness of the relationships between poverty, health and economic development; in this regard, the importance of the commitment of WHO as well as the contribution of nursing and midwifery to any global poverty reduction strategy was highlighted.
