The diabetic patient's; Do they know and accept their disease?

Introduction: the diabetes mellitus type 2 constitutes a problem of public health for the magnitude of the bio-psyco-social repercussions and the presence of neurologic and metabolic complications in the individual that suffers it. One in the intervention ways in the control of this illness is the education and training to the patient with this pathology (selfcare, hygienic-dietary measures and pharmacological treatment).
Objective: to describe the knowledge who in suffers this illness regarding the symptoms and the complications that it presents.
Material and methods: 119 patients were selected with diabetes type 2, attributed the General Hospital of Area 11, and 69 diabetic patients of external consultation of the Unit of Family Medicine 79. It was validated the mensuration instrument that consists of questions about illness knowledge and complications of the referred pathology.
Results: of 188 patients 80% (UMF 79) and 81% (HGZ 11) know their suffering and 82% (UMF 79) and 94% (HGZ 11) the complications of illness being the most frequenttly, in both groups, the urinary tract infections.
Discussion: the education on the diabetic patient’s about selfcare is a fundamental element to face illness; it is not only to transmit or inform, but of incorporating, to make own the suffering, to transform it into value, of whom in has diabetes mellitus type 2, because, it's important to maintain ideal weight, to know values of glucemia, to take care of feeding, practice exercise and the functionality of the same one, he will really be able to commit with his selfcare.
