Child with ambiguous genitalia and nursing intervention
Keywords:
Ambiguous genitalia, Nursing care, IntersexAbstract
Before the seventh week of gestation, the gonads and external genitals are exactly the same in both sexes. It is not until the eighth week that the sexual differentiation appears by the action of HY antigen produced by the Y chromosome. In many cases an alteration of the course during the stage of the fetuss formation might bring differentiation sexual disorders.
Such disorders have been considerate a social-medical emergency to be cared by a multidisciplinary team which is constituted basically by a pediatric endocrinologist, genetist, psychologist or psychiatrist, radiologist, pediatric urologist and nurses. Participation of nurses in this multidisciplinary team has been left aside, but they play a fundamental role in caring of this kind of patients, because since birth, in different stages of the studies, and during the treatment they spend a lot of time with the patient and his relatives. This is the reason why they must have good knowledge of pathology and the way to handle the situation in advantage of the child and his parents
