Nursing care protocol for gyneco-oncological patients with ambulatory chemotherapy

Chemotherapy means every fluid able to destroy or neutralize agents that cause disease, possess an especial affinity for certain microorganisms or molecular structures. Utilizing chemotherapy in oncological disease consists on administration of specific medications or drugs per oral or intravenous via, which act in systemic manner and impede the reproduction of oncological cells or those reproduced abnormally. They are better known as citostatics and are classified on alkylating agents, antimetabolites, antitumor antibiotics, and plant alkaloids. The process to assist people who are receiving chemotherapy should be provided by competent and skilled interdisciplinary health personnel; the contribution of nurses in that process includes interventions before, during, and after the administration of chemotherapy. These actions, improve the quality of care delivery and guarantee the accomplishment of therapy; Even, the benefit is enhanced, if it is utilized the methodology of nursing process during the design of individualized plans, which identify, opportunely, real and potential problems during the assessment phase; therefore, it facilitates the diagnosis of alterations in human responses. This protocol of nursing care is a proposal that emphasizes the needs of care to gyneco-oncological patients with ambulatory chemotherapy, from the multidimensional perspective of human responses. It is supported on the professional experience of the involved nursing personnel, as well as in the documentation utilized on it.
