Adherence to security measures for the unequivocal identification of the new born

Background: The patient's safety is considered a priority in health institutions due to the increase of adverse risks in the attention provided. Mexico is preparing to join the countries that have a national formal commitent to stop the risks involved in medical attention.
Objective: To evaluate if the procedure for pediatric patient identification full filed the institutional standards.
Methodology: Cross-sectional study. The instrument used was a list of 10 items and administrative instruments of identification. We measured the level of congruence, legibility, and complete data as well as if the users carried their identifications. It was applied to 100 pediatric patients in a Gyneco-Pediatrics Hospital.
Results: We obtained the following, legibility 73 %, level of congruency 76 %, complete data 62 %, patients carried identification in 76 % of cases.
Conclusions: The safety of the patient is necessary and of paramount importance for the institutional delivery of health care.
