Abstract

Introduction: Jean Watson's theory of Human Caring promotes care based on dignity, empathy, and humanistic values through genuine presence and love for the human being.

Objective: To evaluate the perception of patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit regarding the dimensions of humanized care provided by nursing professionals.

Methodology: An analytical cross-sectional study involving 58 patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit. The instrument "Perception of humanized care provided by nursing professionals to hospitalized individuals” based on Jean Watson's Transpersonal Theory of Human Caring (α = 0.934)—was administered. Analysis included descriptive statistics and the Mann-Whitney U test to compare mean scores by gender.

Results: The dimensions with the highest mean score (4.6) were the formation of a humanistic-altruistic system of values, the systematic use of the scientific method for problem-solving, and transpersonal teaching-learning. Significant differences based on gender were observed in five of the ten dimensions evaluated (p < 0.05).

Conclusion: The favorable perception held by intensive care unit patients regarding humanized care provided by nursing professionals reflects the importance of the therapeutic bond and professional competence in the care of critically ill patients.
