Abstract
Introduction: Obstetric nursing plays a crucial role on the front lines of implementing rapid response protocols, such as Obstetric Triage and the "Código Mater" (Maternal Code).
Objective: To determine the effectiveness of an educational intervention based on reflective self-assessment in analyzing the development of clinical competencies among nursing staff during the assessment phase for women with preeclampsia.
Methodology: A pre-experimental pretest-postest study involving an educational intervention with a group of 40 nurses. The study utilized the "Nursing Self-Assessment in the Assessment of Women with Preeclampsia" instrument—designed for a secondary-level hospital—which comprises 5 essential competencies and 32 items, with an internal consistency of α=0.923. Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed.
Results: Improvements in clinical competencies regarding invasive procedures (p=0.010) and fluid status (p=0.027) were statistically significant. When comparing competencies with other variables of interest, a significant difference was found regarding the invasive procedure’s competency (p=0.028) in relation to academic degree.
Conclusion: An educational intervention for nursing staff focused on reflective self-assessment proved to be an effective strategy for consolidating and enhancing mastery of technical-procedural clinical competencies, as evidenced by statistically significant improvements in the critical dimensions of invasive procedures and fluid status.
