Dimensions of skill of the family caregiver for the child hospitalized with cancer in a tertiary care hospital

Abstract
Introduction: The therapeutic management of childhood cancer implies a drastic change in the child's life and their context, which includes the family caregiver.
Objective: To analyze the profile of the family caregiver and their skills in the dimensions of knowledge, courage and patience for the care of the child hospitalized with cancer in a tertiary care hospital in Mexico City.
Methodology: Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, and prolective study carried out in 2023 at a national health institute in Mexico City. A mixed questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic variables and the measurement of care ability in 3 dimensions was administered to 140 family caregivers. A univariate, bivariate and comparative statistical analysis was performed.
Results: The profile of the family caregiver consisted of women in 79%. The average age was of 35 years. A 55% had basic educational level. Regarding marital status, 44% lived in a common law union. The role of the caregiver was self-assigned in 66%. The total care skill was high in 17% of the caregivers. The most prevalent dimension was patience with 49%.
Conclusions: The findings show heterogeneity with research made in Latin America regarding the characterization of the caregiver. Knowing the skills of the family caregiver in the dimensions of knowledge, courage and patience allows the nursing discipline to recognize them as subjects in the transition of care.
