Diabetes mellitus, like other diseases, has been present in the course of history. In 1862, in an Egyptian papyrus dating from the early sixteenth century. C. the first description of clinical symptoms compatible with diabetes was found.
During the first half of the nineteenth century, the cause of diabetes was not found. In 1921, Frederick Banting, a young surgeon, and Charles Best, a medical student, achieved the isolation and extraction of insulin from the pancreatic islets. A year later, at the University of Toronto, the first clinical trial with insulin was performed in Leonard Thompson, a child with diabetes; it was the first step towards controlling the disease.
