The role of nursing in oral health of older adults

Introduction: The population demand for older adults requires the attention of trained nursing professionals who provide comprehensive care that allows the inclusion of oral health; the ability to open an area of opportunity is in the hands of every nursing professional, fostering a multidisciplinary approach and improvement in the care of the elderly.
Objective: To identify the oral health practices carried out by nursing personnel in the elderly and an analysis of the impact that they could have if they were replicated in Mexico at the institutional level.
Methods: A literature review was carried out in six search engines: Pubmed, SciElo, Redalyc, Elsevier, Wiley and Google Schoolar. With MeSH terms in english language (Nursing, Elderly and Oral Health) and in spanish and portuguese (Enfermería, Higiene Bucal, Adulto Mayor and Salud Oral). Seven articles that met the inclusion criteria were reviewed.
Results: The studies showed that, with the training, implementation or evaluation of the nursing staff’s practices, there is an improvement in the oral health conditions of Older Adults. In Mexico, the opening of the nursing staff to explore other areas of opportunity could be directed in oral health practices, adopting the model of other countries.
Conclusions: The participation of Nursing and Dentistry has been growing around the world, however in our country it is still limited and various activities in Health education are omitted, so an evaluation and training of both disciplines is suggested to find a point of meeting and enriching knowledge for the benefit of the population.
