Ageism: a challenge for nursing

Abstract

Introduction: Most people can today aspire to live beyond 60 years. Life expectancy in Mexico is 75 years and it is predicted to increase to 80 years in 2050. As a consequence of demographic aging, the Sociology of Old Age, to study societies as they age, has emerged. Demographic aging is the result of health success, but on a personal level, this stage can be conflict to those who perceive old age in a negative way.

Development: Ancient societies conceived old age in a positive way because it represented the moment of experience and knowledge. However, with the development of capitalism and industrialization, a young person is perceived as more useful for her abilities and physical conditions, than an old person, with her sapience. The study "Mexicans seen by themselves" found that, the stereotypes placed on older adults include the idea that they are fragile, useless, or sick. Although in Mexico, only 26% of elderly population has one disability. The negative perception of old age has contributed to excluding this population group; they are denied work due to their age and are vulnerable to abuse or abandonment.

Conclusion: The nursing professionals can eradicate stereotypes related to older people, through various community health strategies and promoting self-care in the elderly that can preserve their functional independence
