Journal History
The Revista de Enfermería del IMSS was established in 1988 as a platform for disseminating knowledge derived from professional nursing practice and research. In its early years, it stood out for creating an inter-institutional forum for academic and professional exchange.
After an editorial hiatus, the journal resumed publication in 1999 with a quarterly frequency, a renewed Consejo Editorial, and the incorporation of a peer-review system. Since 2011, it has offered an open-access electronic version in PDF, and since 2016, its entire editorial process has been managed online via the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform.
The journal has been led by several experienced editors and supported by distinguished professionals from both academic and healthcare fields. Today, it continues its mission as a platform for scientific communication in nursing, with national and international reach.

Renewal and Editorial Continuity
A great idea that is not shared loses its value. For this reason, the Revista de Enfermería del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social has established itself as a platform for sharing experiences and knowledge derived from professional practice, as well as for building networks of support, collaboration, and mutual enrichment among nursing professionals. It is a space where clinical and academic proposals converge to strengthen professional development.
[Consejo Editorial. Rev Enferm IMSS, 1999;7(1):5]
In 1999, the journal resumed its regular publication cycle with Volume 7, adopting a quarterly frequency and a print run of 10,000 copies. A new Editorial Board and Committee were formed, including distinguished members from national and international health and educational institutions. That same year, the formal peer review system was established, and a more efficient distribution strategy was implemented to reach readers effectively.
Since then, the journal has been led by editors-in-chief from the nursing profession who have significantly contributed to its development:
- Juana Jiménez Sánchez (1999–2003)
- María Antonieta Castañeda Hernández (2004–2006)
- Elisa Morales Olarte (2007–2009)
- Elena Hernández Mendoza (2010)
- Gloria María Galván Flores (2011–2013)
- María Antonieta Castañeda Hernández (2014–2019)
- Olga Lozano Rangel (2020–2021)
- María Antonieta Castañeda Hernández (2023–present)
In 2011, the full-text electronic version of the journal in PDF format was made available on its official website: http://revistaenfermeria.imss.gob.mx/
In June 2014, a collaborative project began with the Área de Medios y Tecnologías de la Educación to implement the Open Journal Systems (OJS) editorial management platform and to develop the journal’s website. Beginning in 2015, articles were also published in HTML format and in both Spanish and English. By 2016, the entire editorial process — from manuscript submission to publication — had fully migrated to an online platform.
With steady progress toward digital transformation, the Revista de Enfermería del IMSS has evolved into a publication that is:
- Strongly supported by the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social.
- Nationally and internationally visible through its official website.
- Transparent in its editorial management, from submission to publication.
- Freely available in full text in PDF format.
- Committed to supporting first-time authors in scientific publishing.
