Historical summary of the midwife in the Valley of Mexico

The midwife in our culture has had a great tradition, in pre-Hispanic times she occupied a preponderant place for her role as priestess, socializer, health educator, in short: she had the status of a wise woman.
The Mexican nurse has as a concern to know her roots as a woman and as a professional, in this article some of the factors that influenced each historical stage are described so that this prestige will decline until it disappears even from the hospital and university environment.
It also points out how there is currently a void that the university midwife can occupy by linking the activities of the obstetric surgeon and the maternal and child nurse.
Finally, the rural midwife is recognized, that woman who, without having the necessary elements, fulfills her role in the most remote corners of our country.
