Abstract

Introduction: Healthcare personnel may be affected in their mental health due to long working hours, the loss of patients, the fear of getting infected or transmitting the virus to their loved ones, and the social isolation they face.

Objective: To determine the relationship between the working conditions, the work demands and the mental health of the nursing staff of a public institution.

Methodology: Cross-sectional study that I analyzed with 200 health professionals; the variables were obtained from the SWS-Survey questionnaire, the mental health scale and the occupational health evaluation and follow-up questionnaire (PROESSAL). Correspondence analysis was used for the categories of work demands and working conditions and the associations were verified using the chi-square statistic; For the analysis of mental health vs. work demands and mental health vs. work conditions, the Kruskal-Wallis statistic was used.

Results: There is a relationship between mental health vs type of activity (r = 0.287, p < 0.001), rest (r = 0.150, p = 0.021) and quality of work (r = -0.296, p < 0.001); Mental health is associated with the mixed work service OR: 0.02 (95%CI: 0.003-0.154, p < 0.001) and the nursing assistant position OR: 7.65 (95%CI: 3.49-16.73, p < 0.001).

Conclusions: Mental health is related to certain dimensions in work demands and working conditions, which agrees with what has been reported in the literature.
