Abstract

Introduction: Breastfeeding has multiple health benefits for mothers and infants and promotes development. It is important to promote educational strategies that encourage early breastfeeding.

Objective: To determine the level of knowledge about breastfeeding before and after an educational intervention in primigravid women.

Methodology: A study quasi-experimental, single-center, was conducted in 200 primigravid patients from Family Medicine Unit (UMF) No. 57 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). The “Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Questionnaire” was applied before and after an educational intervention; data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Student’s t-test.

Results: Of the total 200 primigravid women from UMF No. 57, the mean age was 28.55%, the predominant educational level was a technical career at 37.8%, and 43.8% of women were married. Regarding occupation, 39.3% were predominantly housewives, and the level of knowledge about breastfeeding before the educational intervention was predominantly low at 38.77%, which increased to 82.6% after the intervention, observing a statistically significant increase (p = 0.000) in the knowledge of primigravid women.

Conclusion: An educational strategy is effective in increasing and improving breastfeeding knowledge in primigravid.
