Abstract

Introduction: During the last years, the nursing profession has had important modifications which represent the change in social development. The nursing process is considered an essential tool for the professional practice regarding health care.

Objective: To identify the level of knowledge about nursing process and perception of self-efficiency during its implementation by nursing staff in a private hospital.

Methodology: A transversal study was done in 154 nurses. It was searched over knowledge and self-efficiency perception when implementing the nursing process through an adapted and self-administered instrument which reported a Cronbach-Alfa 0.841. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied to analyze gathered data.

Results: The level of knowledge shown was "sufficient" in nurses working at hospitalization areas with 44.6% and those working at critical care areas with 33.8% obtaining an average of 6.7 in a scale 1 to 10. Regarding the level of self-efficiency to implement the nursing process, 50% nurses in hospitalization areas are "completely sure of doing it", meanwhile 55.1% nurses in critical care areas are only "sure of doing it".

Discussion: Knowledge is indispensable for personal and professional development. Self-efficiency influences in the human behavior because of its impact on goals and aspirations, as well as impediments and opportunities that are present in social life.
Conclusions: It is suggested to fortify the knowledge and mechanisms of self-efficiency regarding the nursing process with which it is expected strengthen professional care for the health of individuals.
