Abstract
Introduction: Central venous catheters are a commonly used vascular access device in hemodialysis patients. They are associated with a high risk of infection and complications, which can be prevented by empowering patients with self-care skills.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of an educational intervention on central venous catheter care knowledge in patients with CKD and hemodialysis.
Methodology: A quasi-experimental study was conducted in 35 patients with CKD and hemodialysis who participated in training on central venous catheter care. A pre- and post-intervention questionnaire was administered with content and construct validation. Data were analyzed using SPSS v24.
Results: The mean age was 41.7 years, with a range of 18 to 71 years. The catheter type used was permanent in 57.1% of cases and temporary in 42.9%. Before the intervention, the mean score was 37.4 points, and after the intervention, it was 94.3 points. The effectiveness of the intervention was assessed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, with a Z value of -5.188 and a bilateral significance level of p = 0.000.
Conclusion: The implementation of an educational program on self-care of central venous catheters in hemodialysis patients proved to be effective in significantly improving the level of knowledge of participants.
