Abstract

Introduction: It is considered that in situations of moral distress as well as of burnout syndrome (BS) the limitation of effective structures and support at work can affect the ability of people to be effective. Even moral distress has been considered a risk factor for BS in the nursing staff.

Objective: To determine the association between the dimensions of moral distress and BS in nursing staff working in pediatric care areas.

Methodology: Analytical cross-sectional study in a sample of 241 nurses from pediatric care areas. Sociodemographic and work data were collected. The MMD-HP-SPA instrument was used for moral distress and the Maslach Burnout Inventory for BS. Besides, it was used a bivariate analysis with odds ratio and a multivariate analysis with successive backward stepwise logistic regression.

Results: there was BS in 34.43% of nursing staff. Smoking as a risk factor had an OR of 2.28 (95% CI 1.08-4.80, p 0.02). Having a support network (OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.29-0.93, p 0.02) and working in another institution (OR 0.17, 95% CI 0.03-0.79, p 0.02) worked as protective factors. Moderate-high moral distress was associated with BS (OR 2.15, 95% CI 1.23-3.75, p < 0.0001).

Conclusions: Moral distress associated with BS in nursing staff working in pediatric care areas allows us to have an overview of the occupational health of nursing staff in particular and of health personnel in general.
