Friendly cities: a possibility of transforming citizens' perceptions and sensitivity toward aging

Abstract

Age-friendly cities are not a current issue, since they have been addressed by the United Nations (UN) since 1982, and today, more than ever, they are relevant due to the global demographic transition. It is estimated that by 2030, one in 6 people will be over 60 years old, which is why population aging is understood with a positive focus on reducing dependency, improving quality of life, and promoting active and healthy aging among the population. From a quality-of-life standpoint the multidimensional perspective of aging must be expanded, considering favorable spaces with infrastructure tailored to the needs of older adults, not only to promote socialization but also to serve as a means to combat dependency and other geriatric syndromes such as cognitive decline, isolation, social confinement, and depression, among others. Therefore, social participation and the development of public policies focused on creating age-friendly cities are important.
