Abstract

Introduction: Hospitalization of premature newborns (NBs) requires, in addition to nursing care, educational intervention for parents to acquire knowledge and skills regarding NB bathing.

Objective: To evaluate parents' knowledge and skills before and after implementing a workshop-style methodology on bathing premature NBs at home.

Methodology: An educational intervention study was conducted for 49 mothers or fathers aged 18 years or older with hospitalized premature NBs. The intervention was implemented in a workshop format, developed in 5 phases, with pre- and post-intervention assessments of knowledge, skills, and perceptions of parents' expectations.

Results: The participants had a mean age of 28.9 ± 6.2 years and were predominantly female (97.96%). The post-intervention evaluation score was 10 (IQR 8.5-10), versus the baseline score of 5 (IQR 4-6), p < 0.0001. The level of knowledge after the educational intervention was high in 75.51% of cases, and the level of skills was good in 81.63% of cases. The perception of 100% of participants on a 5-point Likert-type scale was 5 points.

Conclusions: The workshop intervention on NB bathing showed favorable changes in parents' knowledge, skills, and perceptions.
