Abstract

Introduction: Of health workers, nursing staff are the most affected by burnout syndrome, as a response to chronic work stress manifested by negative attitudes and feelings towards people or towards their own professional role.

Methodology: Cross-sectional descriptive study in 240 nurses who work in Traumatology, Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Neurosurgery services. The proportion formula and stratified probabilistic sampling by area of care were used. It was applied the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) questionnaire, which consists of 3 subscales and a total of 22 items.

Results: Average age was of 31 years. By job category, 68% were assistants and general nurses, and 32% specialists and floor managers. 56% worked in hospitalization services, 22% in emergencies, 12% in operating rooms and 10% in intensive care. By level of intensity, 71% of the nursing staff were located at a medium level of the emotional exhaustion subscale, 67% were at a low level of the depersonalization subscale, and 79% were at a high level of the personal accomplishment subscale.
