Abstract

Introduction: actually diabetes is considered a pandemic disease in Mexico. The incidence is increasing more than three times passing in a decade a rate of 67 in 1983 to 204.2 in 1994. In Nuevo León 1667 diabetic new cases were registered in the last year. The diabetic treatment generally is directed to the clinic aspect and little is done in relation to the development of knowledge; an educational specific program about diabetes that could revert this tendency of the illness.

Objective: to evaluate the impact of an educational strategy in the type 2 diabetic patient.

Material and methods: 43 type 2 diabetic were included with the age ranging from 25 to 60 years old and the evolution from evolution 5 to 20 years. Last glucose was ≥ 150 mg/dL. They were selected in three family medicine clinics. The intervention was of three hours a day for one week by using expositive and demonstrative techniques.

Results: At the three months we observed a profit in the average knowledge about illness 99 ± 0.0 versus 42.1 ± 28.6; and a reduction in the average of glycemic level before breakfast (118.5 ± 25.6 mg/dL versus 259.3 ± 73.6 mg/dL), glycosylated hemoglobin (8.3±1.3% versus 12.2±1.9), weight (71.17±13.79 kg versus 73.21 ± 14.02 kg), and diastolic pressure (77± 6.6 mmHg versus 83 ± 10.2 mmHg).

Discussion: The educational strategy not only functioned for knowledge increase, but also for a reduction of glycemic levels, glycosylated hemoglobin, weight, high blood pressure, and therapeutic requirements.
