A comparative cross-sectional study was carried out during the period from April 10 to September 30, 1995, at the General Hospital of Area with Family Medicine Unit No. 1 and Family Medicine Unit No. 11, of the Mexican Institute of Social Security in Tapachula, Chiapas, with the purpose of identifying the factors related to the abandonment of treatment in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. It was determined that there was an abandonment of antituberculous treatment after 15 days of absence from the last appointment scheduled for clinical control (bacteriological and / or radiological). Through the records of the Departments of Preventive Medicine, 41 patients were identified with abandonment of treatment and 41 with regular compliance. Finally, 37 were analyzed with abandonment and 41 with compliance. The factors related to the abandonment were: being a field worker, assurance to the eventual regime, more than a year of evolution of the disease, a history of alcoholism, ignorance of the disease and its repercussions. In regard to health services, there was insufficient supply of medicines in both units and incorrect information to patients by staff. Based on these results, it is proposed to reinforce the supervision of the program, as well as the training of responsible personnel.
