Family situation and level of self-esteem of the adolescent mother

Abstract

Introduction: Adolescent pregnancy is recognized since the 70 'as a public health problem, 25% of pregnancies are in adolescents. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the socio-family characteristics, level of self-esteem and knowledge of this particular group.

Material and methods: Descriptive, transversal, non-blinded study. We included 267 adolescents between 12 and 20 years of age, excluding those who were sexually violated during their pregnancies, who refused to answer the questionnaire, had mental retardation or serious health. The psychological test was applied. Is it estimated enough? of Lic. María Dueñas, and a questionnaire of 65 questions for the other variables.

Results: Beginning of active sexual life between 12 and 16 years of age, maximum level of primary education, dedicated to the home, catholic, do not use contraceptive methods and married parents, maximum primary education; employee father with income of $ 1000.00 per month, 38% are alcoholics, referring to a harmonious intrafamily communication. Adolescents live in a free union with their partner whose ages fluctuate between 15 and 52 years, employees, with attitude of acceptance to pregnancy, self-esteem level of the adolescent mother in 54% correct and 46% narcissistic; level of knowledge about human reproduction, family planning methods and sexually transmitted diseases, 45% deficient and 23% null.

Discussion: Differences were found in what was reported in other studies regarding the level of self-esteem. There was similarity with schooling and low socioeconomic level, as well as in the level of knowledge about sexuality and reproduction.
