Evaluation of academic performance in master nursing programs

Introduction: In postgraduate programs is common that faculty members performance be evaluated by criteria designed to evaluate faculty of graduate programs, which makes indispensable to validate and count on reliable exprofesso instruments for this academic level.
Objective: To design, validate, and implement instruments to evaluate the faculty’s performance in the master degree program.
Methodology: Descriptive and longitudinal study. The universe was integrated by the total number of students of the Master Nursing Program at National Autonomous University of Mexico, on two following generations, with a total of 30 students.
Results: The faculty performance’s index had an average of 4.14 in the first generation and of 4.69 in the second one, in a scale 0 to 5, where 5 is a very suitable performance. The perception regarding the thesis director reached an average media of 4.53, in the first generation and 4.51 in the second one. The confidence for the instrument was α = 0.98 for theory professor and α = 0.81 for thesis director. Also, it showed stability on different applications.
Conclusions: Professor’s performance was evaluated by the students as very suitable; which means that the purposes of postgraduate degrees have been accomplished, as it has been indicated by Fresan, Loredo and Grijalva. Counting on a system of a faculty’s performance evaluation with reliable instruments allows making decisions for the continued improvement of the program.
